The Ronin

The Ronin is a relatively new project for me. This is an adaptation of the William Dale Jennings’ novel, The Ronin, which is based on a well-known Zen myth. This is my first adaptation and I am working with Tuttle Publishing (specifically Tuttle Classics) on the rights and details involved with adapting a novel to a graphic novel format.

Synopsis (Courtesy of

The legendary story of a brutal man who becomes a folk hero, told in the great tradition of unflinchingly realistic Zen mysticism. The violence of twelfth-century Japan explodes in this half-legendary, half-true story of the violent and heartless Ronin, or wandering Samurai, who slashes his way up from the gutter to wealth, honour and status. In spite of his crimes and bloodthirsty cruelty, he bears the strange mark of destiny that the wise see and respect, even as he destroys them.

Told with humour and irony, the tale ranges from the pleasantly colloquial to the brutally satiric, yet never relents in the Ronin’s search for the truth. The storyteller hides nothing and speaks bluntly, yet this jewel-like tale shimmers with tantalizing riddles that will haunt the reader just as they haunted the Ronin. This brief tale is sure to shock, confound, and ultimately inspire readers.

The Ronin by William Dale Jennings

“A thunderbolt, full of lightening and excitement, one you won’t put down until its last extraordinary page.” – The Japan Times.

This story is amazing and is well known around the world. The potential audience for this project is vast and international. I have high hopes for my vision of The Ronin, I am loving the process of adapting the novel to a comic and graphic novel format. Please follow along and join me on this journey.
